The white washed stone buildings overlooking Langkawi’s compact Telaga Harbor filled with yachts from large to small could be a small harbor on the Mediterranean Coast. The numerous restaurants along the boardwalk at Perdana Quay reinforce that ambiance with the aroma drifting from the many and varied kitchens.
On one of my first visits to Langkawi, I found myself sitting in a harbor side café. This café, Tapaz was emitting the smell of Mediterranean seafood while I sipped a cold glass of Spanish white wine. It soon became one of my favored spots for ‘unwinding’.
Tapaz, founded and run by Austrian chef and owner Alex Mark, offers a selection of tapas and main courses that thoroughly express a fusion of Spanish and Mediterranean cuisine with a touch of Asia.
Walking down the ‘boardwalk’ along the harbor from Tapaz you will encounter more restaurants all worthy of inspection. Himachi with Japanese food and an outside grill, Mare Blu an Italian Trattoria, The Loaf Bakery serving coffee, baked goods and sandwiches, USSR with Russian favorites, and The Wok Chinese Seafood.
Another local favorite is Privilege serving Malaysian fusion food with a modern twist and culinary artistic touches. They can be found upstairs (above Mare Blu) overlooking the harbor.
Away from the harbor in the Perdana Quay complex you will also find more restaurants including Lebanese, Chinese and Pizza as well as a Spa, a furniture store and a duty free shop. The Perdana Quay side of Telaga Harbor is also just a short walk from Pantai Kok. This is a favorite beach amongst locals to enjoy the view, relax with their family and picnic. A great place to spend an afternoon in Langkawi.
Telaga Harbor and the Perdana Quay are located on the Southwest side of the island on the way to the Oriental Village and the Cable Car. If coming by taxi, just tell them, ‘Perdana Quay’. It’s well worth the trip for either a leisurely lunch or a romantic dinner.
