I’d never heard of Baling before, but it didn’t take long for me to see the uniqueness of this remote district in Kedah, Malaysia. Baling has a vibe of confidence. The people of Baling are creative and industrious. Quiet role models doing their own thing and embracing with gusto what resources they have on hand. In as such, there are plenty of interesting things to do in Baling, Kedah, making it another unique Malaysia destination.
Baling is located just 30-minutes east of Sungai Patani. On arrival, Baling visitors are greeted with surrounding jungle-clad mountains, blue skies, quaint houses and businesses with eclectic landscaping and décor, and plenty of wide-open spaces. Nature, culture and food are the highlights in Baling, and Kedah’s state flag is nearly always prominently displayed.
A little Baling History
The Baling District of Kedah, Malaysia, is a region steeped in history, legend, and cultural diversity. Comprising eight mukims (townships), Bakai, Baling Town, Bongor, Kupang, Pulai, Siong, Tawar, and Teloi Kanan, this area is a fascinating tapestry of myths and multicultural influences.
Baling’s rich history, from the supernatural legend of Raja Bersiong to its cultural ties with Thailand, sets it apart as a unique district. Whether for its historical allure or cultural diversity, Baling offers a fascinating glimpse into Malaysia’s layered past and present.
The name Baling has intriguing origins. According to the Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa (a colorful version of Kedah’s history), the word Baling is tied to the story of Raja Ong Maha Perita Deria, the tyrant ruler of Langkasuka. Nicknamed Raja Bersiung (fanged king), a king with fangs and a craving for human blood.
After his subjects rebelled against him and burned his palace, the Raja fled to Merbau, now Merbau Pulas, where he twisted out his fangs to help disguise his identity. The act of throwing away his removed fangs inspired the names ‘Baling’ (throw) and ‘Siong’ (fang), marking the spots where he stood and his fangs landed.
Alternatively, the name Baling may derive from the Thai phrase ‘Ba Taling’, meaning ‘river bank’, reflecting the district’s geographical and cultural ties to nearby Patani. Or the Siamese words ‘Ba Ling’, which means ‘monkey village’, because the surrounding forest had a large variety of monkeys. However, the Vampire King version seems to be the most popular account.
Baling is closely linked to old Kedah history, a region with roots in ancient Malay and Southeast Asian civilizations. Its proximity to Patani has helped shape the area’s identity over the generations. The district showcases a blend of Malay and Patani influences, especially in its language and traditions. The historical experiences of survival and adaptation by its diverse communities have contributed to the unique character of Baling today.
Unique Things to do in Baling
Baling’s diverse offerings of things to do are sure to be a hit with the intrepid traveler looking to explore Kedah’s roads less traveled. These things to do are a bit spread out over the district, but with a little planning ahead could easily be conquered in a few days. It will definitely be easier if you have your own transportation though.

Climb Gunung Baling Mountain
Standing at 546 meters, Gunung Baling is a prominent natural feature in the town of Baling, and is part of a trio of significant peaks, alongside Gunung Pulai and Gunung Besar. Conveniently located 30 minutes from Sungai Petani and about an hour from the southern Thai border, this mountain is a favorite among hiking enthusiasts.
The single trail to the summit spans approximately 1.85–1.90 km. While the flat sections are manageable, the steep, rocky, and muddy portions require careful navigation. The trail is well-marked, but current safety measures, such as handrails and ropes, are sporadic and not always positioned at the most challenging spots. Slippery mud and rocks dominate the steeper sections, requiring patience and caution, particularly for less experienced hikers.
Plans are underway to improve these installations, promising better support for beginners in the future. Despite the trail’s challenges, Gunung Baling offers a rewarding hike with breathtaking views from the peak. It’s a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore Kedah’s rugged natural beauty. Beginners should prepare adequately and proceed cautiously, but with improvements on the horizon, the trail promises to become even more accessible and enjoyable.
