Tucked away in the small village of Kuala Teriang, in a converted kampung house, Mangoes Bar and Grill has become a Langkawi institution over the years. Upon approaching this veritable establishment, at the southern end of the Kuala Teriang waterfront, patrons are greeted by a small hand painted sign that leads into the lushly landscaped entry way.
The open-air low roofed dining area is complimented with the surrounding gardens leading into the mangrove-lined sea. From the glass fishing floats hanging from the ceiling to the L–shaped bar, the atmosphere is intimate and welcoming. Most likely you will be personally welcomed by either Lutz or Michele, the proprietors, or if not, one of the friendly and attentive staff. This is a well-known secret amongst Expats and locals alike where many people congregate in a friendly exchange of conversation and dining.
But Mangoes is really about the food. The menu offers one of the most extensive selections of western favorites in Langkawi, from starters and salads to mains and desserts. The recipes are the loving work of Michele who is constantly creating new dishes and is a master of the dessert selection. Start with pate and some crisp garlic bread or the potato and leek soup and then select one of the many salads. It’s the mains and of course the daily specials where the decision gets difficult.
The lamb is slow cooked until in falls off the bone and if you feel like having a steak? The steaks are cut under the supervision of Lutz to just the right thickness and then aged a bit more and pan grilled to perfection. T-Bone or Rib eye, it’s a tough decision. The Sheppard’s Pie and Fisherman’s Pie are both delicious and hearty and the best on the island. And The King Prawns sautéed in butter and garlic will sate your shellfish cravings.
Started just a couple of years ago one of Mangoes signature days is Sunday. Normally open at 5pm, on Sunday they open for brunch at eleven. The Eggs Benedict, Mangoes’ Hearty Breakfast and Michele’s Breakfast Omelet all have that added specialty home-smoked pork bacon. Add in a Mimosa or a Bloody Mary, with the sea breeze and the sound of water in the Mangroves, and you have a perfect spot to spend a Sunday. Patrons often arrive for a late brunch and meet friends and while away the afternoon until sunset.
Mangoes also has numerous special nights during the month when they offer a buffet style dinner where the number of sides and desserts are so extensive you will have to eat slowly to try them all. And of course there are the deserts! All to be tried and savored with a coffee after the meal. Try The Rum Mango Crepes or Bailey’s Cheesecake and for the choco-holic, Michele’s own Chocolate Mud Cake.
Intimate, friendly, delicious food and great ambiance, Mangoes is truly a hidden gem on the list of Langkawi dining options.
