Although Mardi Agro Park was originally established as a horticultural station in 1983, it has since rebranded a couple of times to become its present ‘Mardi Agro Technology Park’ incarnation. Don’t let the long name scare you off because Mardi Agro is still just a good old-fashioned, family fun (yet educational) place to visit.
Since 1995, Taman Agro Teknologi Mardi (Mardi Agro Technology Park) has been a popular agrotourism destination combining agricultural technology and conservation. Yup! That’s nearly thirty years! To this day, visitors can still experience the latest agricultural practices in a semi ‘old school’ farm setting, offering more of an educational experience than other agrotourism labeled venues. They also limit their ‘cutesy’ décor to the occasional fruit cartoon here and there.
Set within 28-35-hectare (depending on who you ask), the park houses over 20 types of seasonal and non-seasonal fruits, along with a variety of controlled cultivations, such as grapes and melons. The park’s various trees and plants are labelled with identification signs with the opportunity to stop and take a closer look via tram tour, or simply stroll the grounds on foot at their own pace.
Mardi Agro Park Tram Tour for the Win
The park’s social media postings often indicate that they have a lot of activities available, including camping and ATV riding. And that’s true… if you happen to be a team building group or other special tour group. But for the average visitor, the standard Tram Tour is generally the offering.
The Mardi Agro Tram Tour is a win in my book, and I’ve taken it at least 5 times over the past 10 years. It hasn’t changed much since my first visit back in 2013, but that my friends is a good thing. Nothing worse than fixing something that isn’t broken.
The tram tour is a 90-minute ride through the picturesque fruit farm in an open-air covered tram. Various stops are made along the way, depending on the weather and the general interest of the group. The tour guides have become especially adept at reading visitors’ enthusiasm and may adjust stops accordingly. However, if any particular agricultural wonder intrigues you, do let the guide know!
Fruit Buffet, Selfies, Reindeer and More!
First stop on the tram tour is the fresh fruit buffet, where you can pretty much eat as much fruit as you want while enjoying the surrounding landscape. A nearby I (heart) Mardi sign offers a souvenir photo op as do a few other fun hot spots along the way.
Depending on which fruits are in season, you’ll be able to spot them enroute. If you want to stop for a closer look, don’t be shy to say something. Questions are always welcome too. Be on the lookout for the pineapple patch and even some coffee plants too.
You’ll meet a herd of reindeer on the tour and they are just too cute. Greens will be provided so you can hand feed them some tasty treats. It’s not a ‘petting zoo’ set up, but they will be nibbling from your hands safely away from big Daddy’s antlers.
After the tour winds up, visitors are welcome to walk around on their own or get a bite to eat or drink at the onsite café. Be sure not to overlook the souvenir stand next to the tram waiting area. You can get your name written on a tiny piece of rice, and it is absolutely mind boggling to watch this unique creation made. The perfect Langkawi souvenir for sure!
Where is Mardi Agro Park?
Located on Jalan Nyior Chabang, Mardi Agro Park is conveniently right next door to Lubuk Semilang Recreational Park, home of Lubuk Semilang Waterfall and Gunung Raya’s Thousand Memories Eagle Stairs. For the true nature lover this makes for an interesting nature-based tri-fecta outing. Or at the very least a few extra Instagram photo ops. So, keep that in mind if you are in the area.
